How to prepare a DXF file for laser cutting
A clean file means a faster quote, no redrawing charges and parts that match your intent. Here is what we check when a drawing arrives, so you can check it first.
File format and units
- Send DXF or DWG. AI, SVG, PDF and STEP also work; we convert them.
- Draw at 1:1 scale in millimetres. Put one overall dimension in your message so we can verify the scale.
- One part per file is ideal, or clearly separated parts with quantities noted.
Geometry rules
- Closed contours. Every outline and hole must be a closed shape with no gaps or overlapping lines. Open contours cannot be cut.
- No duplicate lines. Stacked lines make the laser cut the same path twice and burn the edge.
- Text to outlines. Convert fonts to curves. Fonts are not read by the cutting software. Use a stencil font or add bridges if letters like O, A and B must keep their centres.
- Minimum hole size: about the sheet thickness, never under 1 mm.
- Minimum bridge width between cut-outs: at least the sheet thickness, 1.5 times for stainless.
- Sharp inner corners get a small radius equal to the kerf. Draw them square and we handle it, or add a 0.2 mm radius yourself.
- Layers: put cutting on one layer and engraving or marking text on another named MARK.
Only have a PDF, photo or sketch?
Send it anyway. A dimensioned PDF is enough for most parts. For a sketch, write the overall size and key dimensions on it. For a pattern from a photo, tell us the final panel size. We draw the cut file and send you a preview to approve before cutting. Simple conversions are included in the quote.
What to put in the WhatsApp message
- The file.
- Metal and thickness, or what the part is for so we can suggest.
- Quantity.
- Whether you supply the sheet.
- Finish and marking needed, if any.
- Date you need it.
That is everything we need to quote the same day. See the price guide for what drives the number.
WhatsApp a DXF, PDF, photo or sketch. We reply with price and lead time the same working day.
Frequently asked
Which software should I use to make a DXF?
AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inkscape and CorelDRAW all export DXF. Export flat 2D geometry only, at 1:1 in mm.
Can you cut text and logos?
Yes. Convert text to outlines and remember that enclosed letter centres fall out unless you use a stencil font or add bridges.
Why does my part have rounded inner corners?
The laser beam has a width, the kerf, of about 0.2 mm, so an inside corner always carries a tiny radius. For a sharp-fitting corner, add a small relief notch in the drawing.
Do you keep my files?
Approved programs are kept so repeat orders cut identically. Your drawings are not shared.
